Today we decided to show you how we helped one of the clients deal with several popular problems associated with gates. If you have such a situation, you will need to read the blog further to find out how we can assist you with Houston gate and fence repair.
The Challenge Of A Sagging Gate and Wobbly Post
When we first arrived at the job, our client Matt had a couple of issues with his gate and fence. Here’s what we found:
- Sagging Gate: The gate had clearly settled over time and was no longer square.
- Wobbly Post: One of the fence posts was loose, making the entire gate feel unsteady.
- Loose Lattice and Missing Cap: The latticework was coming loose, and the cap was falling off.
Our client was worried we’d have to replace the post. But we told him, ‘Don’t worry! With the right fix, we can save the post and get the gate working without it costing too much.’
How We Diagnosed and Fixed the Problems
Here’s how we approached the repair, step by step:
1. Inspect the Post
We started by examining the post, which had a small rut below ground level. It was a little worn but still solid enough to work with. We told our client that replacing the post wasn’t necessary just yet. Instead, we could stiffen it up, giving the fence at least 8-10 more years of life much more cost-effective than replacing the entire fence.
2. Set the Post in Place
After digging down to get a better look, we stabilized the post by securing it with a scrap piece of wood and a stake in the ground. Instead of using concrete or gravel, we opted for a two part expanding foam. This foam hardens and secures the post in place in about 1-2 hours, depending on the temperature.
3. Fix the Sagging Gate
Next, we turned our attention to the gate. It wasn’t square anymore this is a common issue with gates that sag over time. We used a framing square to check the measurements and confirmed that the gate had shifted out of alignment.
4. Measure the Diagonals
We measured diagonally to make sure the gate was perfectly square. The numbers were off by just half an inch, meaning one side of the gate had sagged slightly.
To fix the sag, we used a clamp and a couple of custom made blocks to pull the gate back into position without damaging the wood.
5. Add Stability to the Gate
Once the gate was square again, we reinforced it with some custom made brackets. These brackets not only added strength and stability to the gate but also blended seamlessly with the wood, so they won’t be noticeable once they weather and blend into the fence.
While the foam was setting, we tightened the lattice with quarter crown staples and reattached the cap to the post. Once everything was secure, we covered the foam with soil to give it a clean, finished look.
The Outcome was a Stronger and Longer-Lasting Gate
After a couple of hours of work, we had the post stiffened, the gate straightened, and everything looking as good as new. Matt was thrilled with the results:
- Gate: No more sagging, fully aligned, and operating smoothly.
- Post: Solid and sturdy, with the foam ensuring it stays in place for years to come.
- Fence: The loose lattice was fixed and the cap was securely reattached.
Many features that impressed our client include the extra stability provided by the specially designed brackets. Besides, they served a construction function, which was very helpful, as the additional elements contributed to the pleasant appearance of the gate as well. In the long run, they’ll be coated with the fence and you won’t distinguish them as different from the actual structure that surrounds the fence.
